Authorities in southern California said Thursday that dozens of residents were still unaccounted for after powerful mudslides that have killed 17 people, including four children, and destroyed homes in a region already pummeled by massive wildfires. Heavy rain on Tuesday, which followed 10 months of drought, sent sticky mud and debris flowing from the hills into Montecito and other towns in Santa Barbara County, northwest of Los Angeles.

A few who live amid the usually serene beauty and year-round warmth of Santa Barbara County say nature's recent onslaughts of wildfires and mudslides have dampened their California dreams. For Hannah Troy, the twin blows of the Thomas Fire, which scorched parts of Santa Barbara last month in the biggest wildfire in the state's history, and this week's deadly mudslides only deepened her unease about the landscapes around her. "California to me feels like it's just becoming a flourishing tinderbox," Troy said at a Red Cross shelter at a college in Santa Barbara, a wealthy city a couple hour's drive up the Pacific coast from Los Angeles.

California mudslides: Three-year-old girl among dead as names of victims released

Added: 13.01.2018 23:01 | 0 views | 0 comments

Torrential rain sent an avalanche of debris and water surging down a hillside that had been stripped bare by recent wildfires, tearing houses from their foundations and launching a days-long slog to rescue people still trapped in cars and homes. As the search-and-rescue effort unfolded, sheriff’s officials declined to publicly release details about the dead — in part an acknowledgement that the toll could mount higher — as they whittled down the number of missing people. All 17 people who perished were from the town of Montecito, and four were children: 10-year-old Jonathan Benitez, 3-year-old Kailly Benitez, 12-year-old Sawyer Corey and 6-year-old Peerawat Sutthithepn all lost their lives.
